About the Competition
The National Geographic Channel Australian Geography Competition is a contest for Australian secondary school students, assessing their geographical knowledge and skills. The Competition aims to encourage student interest in geography and to reward student excellence.
The Competition is open to students studying geography (or an integrated social science that includes geography) in all Years of secondary school. Primary schools may also enter. Teachers should check the past questions for level of difficulty. Initially held in 1995, the Competition has a wide appeal to students, their families and teachers. In 2011 it attracted entries from approximately 80,000 students.
The Competition is held in schools each year in late March. It consists of multiple-choice questions testing geographical knowledge and skills. The answer sheets are centrally marked and all participants receive results and certificates – high distinction, distinction, credit or participation. Students are graded at three age levels – junior for students 13 and under; intermediate for students 14 and 15 years old; senior for students 16 to 18 years old.
Outstanding students at each age level win prizes ‒ books, medals for seniors, and for the highest-scoring students, the special prizes in the next two paragraphs.
Students under 16 years old who come first in their State or the combined Territories (ACT, NT and External Territories) compete in a Final in early June. The top student each year wins an all-expenses paid trip to represent Australia in the biennial National Geographic World Championship. Our second-placed students from two years play off for the third team position.
For senior students, the top male and female students in Year 11 or lower, in each State and the combined Territories, are selected for Geography's Big Week Out , which focusses on fieldwork, spatial technologies and analytical skills. Australia's teams to the International Geography Olympiads are selected from the students at the Big Week Outs.
The Competition is a joint initiative of the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland and the Australian Geography Teachers' Association and is proudly sponsored by National Geographic Channel.
